DAILY RIDER  Hangs by my door — two minutes of wheel truing before a ride is better than 10km of slow rolling home

This is in my toolkit since the first month I started riding seriously. Before I had one, I rode on wobbly wheels for weeks thinking it was just how bikes feel. It is not how bikes feel. A properly trued wheel rolls faster, handles better, and puts less stress on your bearings.

What wheel truing actually involves

A wobbly wheel — one that wobbles side to side as it spins — is caused by spokes at unequal tension. Tightening and loosening individual spokes pulls the rim into alignment. It sounds technical but the basic version is genuinely learnable in one session.

My process: spin the wheel, watch where it wobbles, tighten the spoke on the opposite side of the wobble by a quarter turn, spin again, repeat. Two minutes before most rides, five minutes when it actually needs attention.

The daily use reality

Delhi roads are rough. Potholes, speed bumps, drain covers — wheels go out of true regularly if you’re doing 40km daily. I check mine every 3-4 days now. Catching a small wobble early takes 2 minutes. Letting it build into a proper wheel issue takes a workshop visit and real money.
